People are spending more time at home amidst the pandemic. That’s why more and more homeowners are looking for ways to improve indoor air quality and comfort. One way of improving indoor air quality is to install an air purifier.

What are the things you should know before buying one? Our air conditioning repair technicians at Sherrell Air Conditioning & Heating list them in this post.

3 Things to Consider Before Buying an Air Purifier

Room Size

Where do you plan to install your new air purifier? Small devices won’t be able to effectively purify the air in a large room, while large, heavy-duty purifiers would be overkill in a small room. When evaluating an air purifier’s capacity, look at the unit’s specs, particularly the metric measuring air changes per hour. This indicates an air purifier’s filtration capabilities. For instance, a compact air purifier can turn over the air in an average-sized room eight times in an hour, but can only do so four times per hour in a larger room.

Your Home’s Needs

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach when looking for an air purifier. That’s because certain air purifiers are more efficient at filtering out specific kinds of air pollutants. To get an idea of how well an air purifier can remove air pollutants within a room, check its Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). The higher the unit’s CADR rating, the faster it can purify the air.

HEPA Filter

Choose an air purifier with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, the gold standard in air purification. According to standards set by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology, a HEPA filter should be able to trap 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns or larger. To give you an idea of how small a micron is, smoke particles are as small as 0.1 to 0.3 microns, while dust particles are usually 0.5 to 3 microns in size. Keep in mind that the aforementioned requirement is just the minimum—there are many purifiers that can filter out particles smaller than 0.3 microns. If you’re having trouble choosing an air purifier, consult a cooling and heating service company.
